Port St. Lucie doctor to buy 147 turkeys needed for feast

November 19th, 2008 by TCPalm.com

— A local doctor is making sure there’ll be plenty of turkey at the 19th annual Thanksgiving Day Community Feast.

Dr. Shamsher Singh, a dermatologist with a practice near the St. Lucie Medical Center, has agreed to buy the remaining 147 birds of the 700 turkeys needed for the event, which is expected to feed about 2,000 people at the feast site — Orange Avenue and Ninth Street in downtown Fort Pierce — and about 6,000 more with meals delivered throughout St. Lucie County.

Stacy Malinowski, program director for Fort Pierce-based Mustard Seed Ministries, the lead organization for the feast, said the 147 turkeys will cost about $1,500.“Dr. Singh also has agreed to give us some additional money to cover some of the expenses of the feast,” Malinowski said, adding that the total amount of the donation will be determined Tuesday afternoon.

“This is a very generous gift from a very community-minded individual,” Malinowski said. “And it’s come on a year when we’ve had some real challenges because of the poor economy, first from the fact that we’ll be feeding about 1,000 more people than last year, and second because some of the organizations that helped us out in the past couldn’t do it this year.”

To sign up to receive a Thanksgiving meal or volunteer to help with the feast, call Mustard Seed at (772) 465-6021.
