Elderly couple robbed at gunpoint by masked thieves

November 7th, 2008 by Ana X. Ceron

An elderly couple was robbed in their Martin County home at gunpoint Thursday night, when they reported that thieves wearing masks taped their mouths shut and threatened to kill them.

Robert Thacker, 87, and his 83-year-old wife, Ruth, told Martin County sheriff’s deputies that they were at their home when someone knocked at their door shortly after 8:30 p.m.
After Ruth Thacker opened the door, a man pushed her inside and demanded the couple get on the ground, according to a sheriff’s report. Two other men then came in and ordered the Thackers into a bathroom, they said.

The men, who were armed with a handgun, also placed duct tape over the couple’s mouths and covered them with a sheet in the bathroom, the report states.
The robbers also disconnected the phones in the couple’s house and threatened to kill them, deputies said.
The Thackers reported that the men took off with their safe, which contained cash and a diamond necklace and bracelet.
The couple were treated at the house for minor injuries, deputies said.
There is no suspect information and there were no other witnesses.
Anyone with information is asked to contact sheriff’s Detective Y. Carde at (772) 220-7060, or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at (800) 273-8477.
