FORT PIERCE — Two men were arrested on child neglect charges after police said the children under their care were living in a home with feces on the floor and roaches crawling out of torn-up mattresses.

Police were called to the home in the 1100 block of Jasmine Avenue on Thursday on a report of a missing 12-year-old girl. The girl eventually returned that night, but as police conducted their initial investigation, they found the home she lived in with her stepfather and another man in deplorable conditions, according to an arrest report.

Ten children – ages ranging from 4 months to 12 years – lived in a home smelling of feces and urine, police said.

Police noticed bugs and exposed electrical outlets in the children’s two bedrooms. In the boys’ room, roaches climbed out of tears in mattresses, police said.

The children’s bathroom floor was covered in urine and feces blocked up the toilet, according to the report. An upside down construction-style hardhat seemed to have been turned into a makeshift toilet, police said.

Rotting foot and dirty diapers were strewn in the kitchen, police said, and trash littered the house.

The children’s mother had been out of town for about three weeks, police said, leaving the kids in the care of 32-year-old Rupert A. Thompson, the girl’s stepfather, and 18-year-old Kenron Thompson.

Both were arrested on child neglect charges and are being held in the St. Lucie County jail on $2,500 bail.
