Fort Pierce Teen Twarts Burglary
October 31st, 2008 by Ana X. CeronFORT PIERCE — Police are crediting a quick-thinking teen for thwarting a burglary on Thursday.
Salvador Martinez told police he was sleeping on the living room sofa shortly before 2:30 p.m. when he heard noises coming from his bedroom. When he checked to see what was going on, he realized his window screen was being ripped open, the 16-year-old said.
So he headed back to the living room and dialed 911. As he waited for officers to arrive, Martinez hid in the laundry room, where he could hear the thieves trying to break in but then desist when they realized the door was shut, according to a police report.
Police say they caught one of four suspects, who were able to break in through one of the home’s windows and ransack several rooms. Police were able to recover an iPod and computer cables that were taken out of the home, the report states.
A 14-year-old Fort Pierce boy was arrested on burglary and property damage charges in connection with the incident.
